If you’ve lost multiple teeth, then our dentists in Dallas, TX, may recommend that you restore your smile and oral function with a high-end restoration, like partial dentures.

At Lakewood Dental Group, Dr. Shaun Sigurdson and Dr. Mihir Patel understand the importance of replacing missing teeth. That’s why our team helps patients comfortably and effectively replace several missing teeth with quality partial dentures. These restorations let patients continue speaking, eating, and smiling with unlimited confidence and ease.

What are partial dentures?

Partial dentures are custom-made, removable appliances that usually consist of false teeth that are attached to a gum-colored plastic base. These restorations can replace multiple missing teeth in the upper or lower jaw, but they rely upon healthy, neighboring teeth to hold their position in the mouth. The use of metal clasps or precision attachments firmly link the partial denture to the abutting teeth, which offers reliable comfort and stability.

What if my remaining teeth aren’t healthy enough to support a partial denture?

Patients with unhealthy or damaged remaining teeth may still be suitable candidates for partial dentures. Typically, these patients will require some preparatory procedures–such as placing dental crowns on abutting teeth–before Dr. Sigurdson and Dr. Patel can proceed with denture treatment.

Should I wear my partial denture every day?

Yes. After patients receive their custom-made partial dentures, they should wear them every day for the majority of the day. This will help patients get accustomed to their new appliances, and it will help Dr. Sigurdson and Dr. Patel find areas that may need adjustment.

Furthermore, it’s important that patients wear their partial dentures consistently because neglecting to wear them regularly could result in the surrounding teeth shifting from their position. As a result, the restoration may no longer fit comfortably in the mouth, which can lead to pain, irritation, and dental damage.

What are some tips and tricks for getting used to my new partial denture?

Aside from wearing the appliance daily, patients should practice eating, drinking, and speaking with their new partial dentures. When eating, patients should start by eating softer foods and taking smaller bites. Once they feel more comfortable, they can move on to harder-to-chew foods and larger bites.

Some patients find that they have a lisp or experience some difficulty speaking with their new partial dentures. Dr. Sigurdson and Dr. Patel recommend reading aloud or talking with a trusted friend or family member to get used to the new appliance.

With a little time, practice, and patience, many people find that they forget they are wearing partial dentures at all!

How do I care for partial dentures?

Patients should rinse their partial dentures after eating and drinking. This will remove debris that can cause cavities on the surrounding teeth.

Additionally, patients should thoroughly clean their partial dentures every day. Simply brushing the appliance with warm water, soap, and a soft-bristled toothbrush is enough to keep it clean. But, be sure to thoroughly rinse the partial denture before returning it to the mouth!

Patients should remove their partial dentures at night and soak them in an ADA-approved denture cleanser. Keeping the appliance moist will increase its lifespan and prevent damage. Just be sure to thoroughly rinse it before placing it back in the mouth!
