Periodontics

Gum disease affects almost half of adults, but most are unaware. Periodontal treatments at Lakewood Dental Group can treat gum disease and preserve your teeth, gums, and smile.

Gum disease, or periodontitis, is the number one cause of adult tooth loss. At Lakewood Dental Group, Dr. Shaun Sigurdson and Dr. Mihir Patel offer complete periodontal care to prevent, diagnose, and treat gum disease. They also perform crown lengthening, a cosmetic procedure designed to address excess gum tissue and a gummy smile. No matter what periodontal treatment you undergo, your Lakewood dentist will use very gentle techniques to reduce discomfort.

What is Gum Disease?

Gum disease is an inflammatory condition, caused by the build-up of bacteria, plaque, and tartar in the gums. In the early stages, the condition is known as gingivitis. Gingivitis brings about mild symptoms and is reversible. Left untreated, however, gingivitis will progress to periodontitis. As bacteria proliferate, pockets will develop in the gums, and teeth may start to loosen.

Untreated gum disease can also lead to systemic health problems, such as cardiovascular disease. In fact, people with gum disease are two to three times more likely to suffer a heart attack or stroke.

Gum Disease Evaluation

Although there is no cure for gum disease, it is much easier to treat in the early stages. For this reason, routine dental visits are quite important. At each appointment, your dentist will evaluate your soft tissues and look for the signs of periodontitis. Symptoms may include

  • Swelling
  • Redness
  • Bleeding
  • Gum recession
  • Chronic bad breath
  • Loose teeth

If they diagnose gum disease, our dentists in Dallas will recommend appropriate care based on the severity of your condition.

Scaling and Root Planing

We perform non-surgical periodontal treatment whenever possible. Scaling and root planing, also known as a deep cleaning, is one of the most common treatments for moderate to severe gum disease. During this procedure, Dr. Sigurdsen or Dr. Patel will remove bacteria, plaque, and tartar from your teeth and the pockets in your gums. He will also smooth your dental roots, removing crevasses and grooves where bacteria may reside.

Following a deep cleaning, you should be extra vigilant about your dental hygiene. Daily brushing and flossing, along with regular visits to the dentist, can prevent tooth loss and keep symptoms from worsening.

Crown Lengthening

Excess gum tissue can make your teeth look worn down or disproportionately short. During crown lengthening, your Lakewood dentist will trim off a small layer of tissue to reveal more of your teeth. He can also sculpt and reshape your gum line to give you a straighter-looking smile.

Our dentists use conservative methods and precise techniques to minimize the impact on your gums. Although you may have some minor sensitivity following crown lengthening, the discomfort will fade quickly. Results, however, are permanent, and you will enjoy a beautifully enhanced smile.
