What is TMJ Disorder?

The temporomandibular joints control jaw movement and keep your lower jaw connected to the base of your skull. TMJ Disorder develops when the muscles and ligaments connected to these muscles become inflamed. This condition is fairly common and affects between 5 and 12% of the population.

What causes TMJ Disorder?

Several things can contribute to the development of TMD:

  • Bite misalignment, or malocclusion
  • Chronic teeth grinding, or bruxism
  • Facial trauma
  • Arthritis

In some cases, the cause of TMJ Disorder is unknown.

What are the symptoms of TMJ Disorder?

Chronic jaw pain is the most common symptom of TMD. Sometimes this pain may spread to the ears, neck, and shoulders. Other signs of the condition include:

  • Chronic headaches
  • Ringing in the ears
  • A clicking noise when you open or close your mouth
  • Limited range of motion in the jaw joints
  • Problems chewing
  • Facial swelling

What are my treatment options?

Neuromuscular dentistry focuses on healing the underlying cause of TMD. Because of this, Dr. Sigurdson will carefully evaluate your bite and jaw position before recommending appropriate care. Your treatment protocol may include one or more of the following:

  • Oral appliance therapy: Oral appliances are removable splints covering your upper and/or lower teeth. While you are wearing it, the device will realign your jaw to relieve pressure on the joints. It can also keep your teeth from touching to prevent grinding and clenching.
  • Occlusal adjustment: Dr. Sigurdson can reshape the chewing surfaces of one or more teeth, removing a small amount of dental tissue. This procedure can redistribute the balance of your bite to place even pressure on your jaw joints.
  • Invisalign®: If widespread dental misalignment is contributing to TMD, orthodontic treatment may be appropriate. We use clear, discreet aligners to achieve comparable results to metal braces.
  • Physical therapy: Your Lakewood dentist may recommend certain exercises to strengthen your jaw muscles.
  • Medication: Over-the-counter and prescription pain relievers can temporarily reduce inflammation and soreness.
  • Lifestyle changes: Poor posture can exacerbate TMJ symptoms, so your dentist may teach you healthier ways to hold your neck and shoulders. Additionally, since anxiety can contribute to chronic teeth grinding, you may benefit from counseling or stress-relief techniques.

What are the benefits of TMJ treatment?

When TMJ disorder is left untreated, jaw pain may worsen and could become debilitating. In turn, your chronic pain could lead to sleep disorders, anxiety, and depression. Plus, if bruxism is at the root of your TMD, you may suffer from dental erosion, cracked teeth, and dental sensitivity. Appropriate care can ease your pain and protect your health.
