Is there a right and a wrong way to brush my teeth?

Yes – overly vigorous brushing can be almost as destructive as not brushing enough! For a healthy mouth, place your brush at a 45-degree angle and use small, back-and-forth strokes across your teeth. When cleaning the back of your teeth, use up-and-down motions. Be sure to brush all areas, including the sides and chewing surfaces, as well as your tongue.

What type of toothbrush should I use?

A brush with soft bristles is best. Hard bristles can be abrasive and may damage your dental enamel. Every three to four months switch to a new toothbrush. Change your brush sooner if you notice it looking old and frayed.

Is chewing gum bad for my teeth?

Sugared gum is certainly harmful, but chewing sugar-free gum for 20 minutes after a meal can actually prevent cavities. When you enjoy gum approved by the American Dental Association, it stimulates the production of saliva, which washes away food and bacteria.

How can I prevent cracked teeth?

Cracked teeth are often the result of chronic teeth grinding, or bruxism. If you notice any of the signs of bruxism, you should seek dental treatment right away before your teeth are permanently damaged. Symptoms may include jaw pain and tension, dental sensitivity, chronic headaches, ear pain, and dental erosion.
